چکیده

Traditionally, there have been few options for navigational aids for the blind and visually impaired (BVI) in large indoor spaces. Some recent indoor navigation systems allow users equipped with smartphones to interact with low cost Bluetoothbased beacons deployed strategically within the indoor space of interest to navigate their surroundings. A major challenge in deploying such beacon-based navigation systems is the need to employ a time and labor-expensive beacon planning process to identify potential beacon placement locations and arrive at a topological structure representing the indoor space. This work presents a technique called IBeaconMap for creating such topological structures to use with beacon-based navigation that only needs the floor plans of the indoor spaces of interest. IBeaconMap employs a combination of computer vision and machine learning techniques to arrive at the required set of beacon locations and a weighted connectivity graph (with directional orientations) for subsequent navigational needs. Evaluations show IBeaconMap to be both fast and reasonably accurate, potentially proving to be an essential tool to be utilized before mass deployments of beacon-based indoor wayfinding systems of the future.

Details-on-demand Mobile Visual Interface for Facilitating Indoor Wayfinding

Wayfinding in indoor spaces, as well as transition between outdoor and indoor spaces (O/I spaces), is a common but sometimes difficult and tedious process in everyday life. This is particularly evident for indoor travel through complex buildings where traditional external aids, such as signs or You-Are-Here maps, are often absent or inadequate (Moeser et al., 1988). In these instances, navigato...

NUSBL: Non-Uniform Sequence Based Localization

For the localization competition, we propose to deploy an indoor localization system based on Non-Uniform Sequence Based Localization (NU-SBL) algorithm. NU-SBL algorithm works by dividing the two dimensional localization space into faces on the basis of the ranked RSS from the deployed stationary beacon nodes. The algorithm requires the scaled floor plan of the building and the location coordi...

The Cricket indoor location system

Indoor environments present opportunities for a rich set of location-aware applications such as navigation tools for humans and robots, interactive virtual games, resource discovery, asset tracking, location-aware sensor networking etc. Typical indoor applications require better accuracy than what current outdoor location systems provide. Outdoor location technologies such as GPS have poor indo...

Structuring Space with Image Schemata: Wayfinding in Airports as a Case Study

Wayfinding is a basic activity people do throughout their entire lives as they navigate from one place to another. In order to create different spaces in such a way that they facilitate people’s wayfinding it is necessary to integrate principles of human spatial cognition into the design process. This paper presents a methodology to structure space based on experiental patterns, called image sc...

Adaptive Navigation Assistance for Visually-Impaired Wheelchair Users

It is estimated that approximately 10% of people who are legally blind require wheelchairs [1]. Wheelchair users with visual impairments face difficulties in avoiding obstacles as well as identifying visual cues in the environment, thus making independent navigation challenging, and in some cases, impossible. The authors in [1] suggest that intelligent wheelchairs capable of collision avoidance...
